Welcome Back
A Note from your CREA President,
Tammy Wawro

April 16th- Negotiations all day

April 19th  pm- District TQ Committee- Sue does an AMAZING job of working through this for us- there are many issues about Professional Development that come to this committee.

April 20th- am- meeting with new “National Coach” for helping to close the Achievement Gap- She is from DC and works for the Ed Trust. She will be consulting for the District through a Grant they received from Ed Trust over the next 2-3 years.

5-8pm Washington High School Equity Report to the Community on the Achievement Gap.

April 21- School Improvement Grants (SIG) webinar from the State- Kim and I met with Dr Benson, O’Malley and Melissa Kiliper-Ernst. We listened to the State DE webinar and came to consensus that these grants this year is not best for our staff and students. THIS IS NOT Race to the Top money- (RttT). SIG grants are only for the Persistently Low Achieving Schools (PLAS).  We have not seen the new application for RttT so can’t discuss where we will stand with that until we know more.  CREA executive board may need to look for another emergency meeting when we see what the grant looks like to determine once again if we will sign on as a partner or not.

April 22- pm -Community Coalition meeting- Kim, Sue Clapp, Rhonda Michels and I worked with the Community group getting the final details ironed out for the NEA sponsored event on closing the Achievement Gap focused on the McKinley Community. Thankfully Kim took the lead and we were able to get organized and finished before 7:30!

April 23- Para In-service Class- Kandy Bekeris and I taught a class in the afternoon of early dismissal on collaboratively working together- teacher and Para. We do wish that we could figure out a way to get both teachers and paras to this type of class.

Saturday April 24th- Reaching for the Stars Charity gala for Cerebral Palsy- A kindergartner at Gibson’s mother was the head fundraiser to get this event going and get a chapter for CP in Iowa. The event did just that. Jen Nurre helped to coordinate this and teachers from Gibson had donated cool things for the silent auction. I felt I should be there to represent CREA.

Sunday April 25th- Spoke to the congregation at Mt Zion Baptist church about the importance of Community involvement in our children’s educations. My point was to reach out from the teaching community to say we want everyone to be working together…and we are not afraid to talk about the fact we have an achievement gap and as

teachers we need their help and support.

School Board Meetings- every other Monday Night

ICPD monthly meetings with Dr. O’Malley- (actually April was the 14th and the 26th)

Shive Hattery Meetings- 2 x this month looking at plans in the new building so CROTA and CREA are not forgotten

Retirement conversations

Continuing- one more Retirement and two more LOA –we agreed to waive the contract for the dates on these to better serve those who were RIF’d.

3-5th Math PLC- final class was April 14th- I will always try to be a part of an evening PLC so I can keep a classroom connection as much as possible.

Respectfully submitted~ Tammy Wawro

Other things that have been going on JUST IN April-

  • 4 Building Resolution Teams- with one all day meeting for a team
  • 6 new Intervention plans or 2 on radar of concern to check on
  • 8 new Maternity leaves borrows or Leave Reserve Waivers
  • A FEW building issues continue to take a large amount of time as well. Association Reps in those buildings have been doing an amazing job of keeping us informed and working with us on these issues.
